Soft-plastic baits come in all shapes and sizes these days. It seems every conceivable type of tail and appendage has been invented, so there is a bait that will work in nearly every situation. However, all have soft-plastic baits have one inherent flaw, namely the "soft" part.

My initial jerkbaits, starting from about 1978, were the Rebel Spoonbill Minnow and the Smithwick Rogue that followed. I spent countless hours fishing and customizing these jerkbaits and figuring out the best method to weight them for different sink, suspend and rise rates.

November on Table Rock usually offers excellent fishing as the water cools down into the low 60s and the bass put on the feedbag. This year, for the Costa FLW Series Championship, that wasn't quite the case. An extended summer (the temperatures in practice approached record highs) kept the fish scattered between offshore summer patterns and shallow fall patterns, and as a result, the fishing was pretty tough.

Tyler Sheppard of Hermitage, Pa., led wire-to-wire and locked down the co-angler win in the 2016 Costa FLW Series Championship at Table Rock Lake with three bass for 7 pounds, 7 ounces on the final day. Pat Fisher of Colbert, Ga., took the early lead at the Costa FLW Series Championship on Table Rock Lake with a 15-pound, 3-ounce day one limit. Fisher has a slim 6-ounce lead over Bradford Beavers of Ridgeville, S.C. Day one was categorized by overall tough conditions as summer lingers on in the Ozarks. Yet, all of the top 10 anglers managed to catch more than 13 pounds today.

With more than 700 miles of shoreline and tons of offshore areas, Table Rock Lake is a big and diverse playing field for the 2016 Costa FLW Series Championship. Mostly running west to east along the White River, the lake offers almost everything besides grass and is big enough to swallow up even the largest tournament.
Scott "Hammerbury" Canterbury loves fishing a jig. Raised up around Guntersville, Eufaula and on the Coosa River, the Alabama pro is more expert than most when it comes to getting the max out of any given jig.
Finishing second to Roy Hawk in the Western Division, Bryant Smith of Castro Valley, Calif., chalked up a pair of Costa FLW Series top 10s on the season along the way to what was by far the best season of his young career at the front of the boat. On Table Rock for the first time ever, I joined Smith and co-angler Casey Dunn of North Highlands, Calif., on the final morning of practice for the Costa FLW Series Championship.
