Learning to Fish

As a little kid, my parents would ship me off to summer camp for a few weeks every summer. Aside from meals and sleeping, every moment was spent outdoors. Fishing was one of our weekly activities. The youngest kids would use sticks with line tied off the end and use white bread as bait (they did this because a bunch of unruly elementary school kids are likely to swing their rods around and stick each other with the hooks).

Older age groups got their hands on quality equipment. Those campers who wanted to learn advanced techniques trained with spincast reels. Older campers who finished training were taken on a field trip to a nearby lake. They’d spend the weekend fishing, camping, and learning how to clean and cook their catch.
