Smallmouth fishing in east Tennessee in early fall can be a frustrating job. You run around the lake, casting and graphing, and the whole time you know there are 5-pound-class smallmouths somewhere right around you. Yet, they just don't seem to cooperate. That's because it's not quite "smallmouth season" in this part of the country until the baseball playoffs come to an end and deer hunting picks up.
Tuesday marked the final day of official practice for the Walmart FLW Tour Invitational presented by Quaker State on Norris Lake. FLW Tour pro Todd Hollowell is fresh off a fourth-place finish in the first Invitational on Norman and loves fishing in the fall. For a look at how he breaks down a lake, I joined him for the final afternoon of practice.

Norris is a big pond that stretches more than 200 miles from the dam up the Clinch River, meaning there is more than enough room for the pros to spread out this week while they search for the big largemouths, spotted bass and smallmouths that call these waters home.

Norris Lake is new for many fishing the Walmart FLW Tour Invitational presented by Quaker State this week, but it is especially new for Chris Gosselaar of Fresno, Calif., who has spent the majority of his fishing career out west to this point. After making the cut at the first Invitational on Lake Norman, Gosselaar seemed like a good person to check in with to see how his practice is shaping up at Norris. We tagged along on his second day.
Winding through the hills of east Tennessee, Norris Lake is huge, seldom fished by major tournaments and home to some of the better smallmouth fishing in Tennessee. Though there are plenty of locals in the 104-boat field, Norris isn't well known to many of the competitors.

Summer-to-fall transition fishing can be some of the toughest fishing of the year. Usually, however, by the middle of October, the autumn season is well underway, and anglers expect the fish to be well into the fall feed. With unseasonably warm and dry conditions throughout the Southeast this fall, the 173-boat field at the 2016 FLW Bass Fishing League Regional at Lake Seminole Oct. 13-15 found out that expectations don't mean much, and being able to stay ahead of the ever-changing fish transition was an ever-challenging scenario.

Not to say that bass fishermen are superstitious, but most agree that sometimes it's a good idea not to tempt fate when something is working, particularly a lucky lure. Chris Aswegan can vouch for the inexplicable power of a special lure. The Tiffin, Iowa, boater won the FLW Bass Fishing League Regional on Kentucky Lake Oct. 13-15, and his primary lure was a Heddon Zara Spook given to him by his 5-year-old son, John, for Father's Day.

Just looking at the numbers on FLWfishing.com, you might think that Cortiana found success a little too quickly. In actuality, he's had a long road to the level he's at now. For years, he's picked away at the occasional FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) and ABA event, and done a lot of fishing with his dad, Carl Cortiana.
The city of San Diego knew there was going to be a major turnout for opening day and the months following, so it partnered up with Ticketmaster so that anglers could purchase their tickets online to launch, park and fish the lake. This eliminated a lot of chaos on opening day and made launching smooth.
