Gross Leads off with 25-8

Day one of the Walmart FLW Tour presented by Quaker State and hosted by Florence/Lauderdale Tourism on Pickwick Lake was a struggle for some, but the top pros still showed out. Best among them was Buddy Gross of Ringgold, Ga., who cracked 25 pounds, 8 ounces to start things off.

Storylines: Gusts and Locks

When the anglers left McFarland Park this morning for day one of the Walmart FLW Tour presented By Quaker State and hosted by Florence/Lauderdale Tourism, they could turn right or left. Turning right meant staying in Pickwick. Turning left most likely meant fishing Lake Wilson. It didn't matter which way they turned, though. Both ended up being tough, though one was significantly worse.

Day one of the Walmart FLW Tour presented by Quaker State on Pickwick Lake took off under conditions that aren't really typical of Alabama in the spring. With a chill in the air and high winds in the forecast, today seems more like April than May. Nonetheless, the Tennessee River has some of the best bass lakes in the country strung along it, and the anglers spreading out into Pickwick and Wilson will surely find some big bass regardless.

Schools are recognizing this, but are still generally fashioned in the same manner as 50 years ago: to prepare students for college and then a "job" that may or may not be there.

While the Walmart FLW Tour event presented by Quaker State and hosted by Florence/Lauderdale Tourism launches out of McFarland Park on the upper end of Pickwick Lake, the host lake isn't the only fishery in play this week. In addition to 50-plus miles of river and lake to fish on Pickwick, the pros also have the option of locking upriver into the smaller Wilson Lake and fishing all the way to the Wheeler Dam.
