Day one of the Walmart FLW Tour presented by Jack Link's on Beaver Lake produced a slew of bags in the mid-teens and JT Kenney of Palm Bay, Fla., fished his way into the lead with a total of 18 pounds, 5 ounces. Close behind, Jimmy Houston of Cookson, Okla., weighed 17-13 to sit solidly in second place.
Capt. Blake Smith goes in-depth on the mistake that might have knocked him out of contention.
Before the Walmart FLW Tour presented by Jack Link's began this morning, there was a lot of talk that Beaver Lake would show out like never before. While the 20-pound range remained safe, Beaver Lake did impress, producing 10 limits over 15 pounds as well as a throng of 12- to 15-pound limits that reached down to 45th place.
Daniel Gray of The Bass Federation's Mid-Atlantic Division claimed the opening-round lead of the TBF National Championship on Table Rock Lake Thursday with a five-fish limit that totaled 13 pounds, 13 ounces. Gray, who lives in Butler, Pa., is ahead of Northern Division boater Justin Parrott by 12 ounces, and Corey Cook of the Mid-Atlantic Division is currently third with 12-13. In the co-angler standings, Dennis Hastings of the Central Division is in first place with three fish and 7-14.
Fishing patterns usually emerge by the last day of practice or the first day of tournament competition, but it still seemed to be catch-as-catch-can for most of the 94 anglers competing on the opening morning of the 2016 The Bass Federation National Championship on Table Rock Lake.
Ever since the schedule was set for the 2016 Cowboy Division to rotate back and forth between two of the hottest lakes Texas has to offer - Toledo Bend and Sam Rayburn - fans and fishermen have been waiting in anticipation for a true Texas stud to show itself at a BFL weigh-in. Well, last Saturday at Rayburn, one did, and the veteran BFL angler who caught it says it gave him the fight of a lifetime.
Typically, Table Rock anglers are banging away at big spawning female largemouths by now, but a Twilight Zone sort of spring has got the fish stuck in a time warp. What with water temperatures trapped in the mid- to high 50s, they seem confused about whether they should be bedding or still staging offshore. What's worse, their reluctance to behave as usual has the 94 anglers gathered here for the 2016 The Bass Federation National Championship just as muddled about where they need to be and what they need to do to win the coveted title.
Day one of the Walmart FLW Tour presented by Jack Link's on Beaver Lake took off under conditions that are almost as perfect as possible.

Over the years of the Walmart FLW Tour coming to Beaver Lake it has seemingly never been the same lake twice. Whether it has been high or low water, dirty or clear, the areas that produce top-10 finishes seem to be the only constant.
