The year that Jimmy Houston first fished a bass tournament of any consequence, he was a senior at Northeastern State University in Oklahoma and contemplating going to law school after graduation. In the larger world outside, U.S. President Lyndon Johnson was contemplating sending more American troops to a distant spot on the map called Vietnam to help resolve a conflict there. Teenage girls were contemplating whether to purchase the new fashion sensation called a "mini-skirt" and what their parents might say about it, and millions of young married couples were contemplating whether they could afford the median sales price of $21,700 to buy a new house.
A lot is at stake when the 2016 Walmart FLW Tour kicks off at Lake Okeechobee on Feb. 4, and FLW wants fans to be just as prepared for the new campaign as the 171 pros who are signed up to compete.

George Kapiton of Inverness, Fla., weighed a five-bass limit totaling 31 pounds even Saturday to win the first FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Gator Division tournament of 2016 on Lake Okeechobee, presented by Navionics. For his victory, Kapiton earned $9,000.

Picking apart the mats with a big weight and sight-fishing for spawning bass are time-honored techniques for Florida, but the casting bite can be just as good at times. It's a proven tournament-winning technique too, which is why fishing a moving bait over and through massive grass fields that Florida offers is an important tactic to know.

Cook, who died Friday morning of an apparent heart attack at the age of 68, capped a successful tournament career that began in 1980 by winning the 1991 Bassmaster Classic. Cook is survived by his wife, Tammy, daughter, Monica, as well as sons Jason, Hunter and Tanner and five grandchildren.

While soft-plastic swimbaits have been tearing it up in tournaments back East for a while, outside of the Bull Shad there haven't been too many hard swimbaits that have made a mark. That might change soon - glide baits are becoming more popular and can be a dynamite option in almost any season other than winter.

Lew's, an industry-leading designer of fishing rods, reels, apparel and accessories, has renewed its sponsorship with FLW for 2016. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
