Lake Okeechobee was stingy to say the least on day one of the Costa FLW Series event presented by Power-Pole, yet a few anglers managed to wrangle some solid limits and put themselves in contention for the title. Peter Cherkas leads the way with his 20-pound bag, but the rest of the top five sits right on his heels.
The opening day of competition for the Costa FLW Series Southeastern Division event on Lake Okeechobee - which is presented by Power-Pole and hosted by Okeechobee County Tourism - was a textbook example of what a cold front does to Florida bass.
Walmart FLW Tour pro Bryan Schmitt has joined the "R-Unit" team of Riot Baits. The Maryland angler has nine wins and 30 top-10 finishes in various FLW circuits. "I have been a fan of the Riot's Fuzzy Beaver for a long time now, and Riot's other baits fit my style of fishing," says Schmitt. "Riot is a young brand with a lot going for it, and the new products it's launching in 2016 have me really excited about this partnership."?
Day one of the Costa FLW Series event on Lake Okeechobee presented by Power-Pole kicked off this morning out of C. Scott Driver Park. A full field of 250 pros and co-anglers blasted off in the first stop of the 2016 Southeastern Division, which is hosted by Okeechobee County Tourism. Competition will be tough as the anglers vie for the $60,000 top prize.

Duel Corporation, parent company of Yo-Zuri America and Hardcore Bass Lures, has entered into sponsorship agreements with FLW pros Mike Surman, Brandon Cobb and Braxton Setzer. Yo-Zuri will be Surman's title sponsor, while Cobb and Setzer have signed on as pro-staffers. Surman has been on the Yo-Zuri pro-staff since 2005.
Winning the Walmart FLW Tour Angler of the Year award in 2015 has been career-changing. There is a different level of respect for AOY winners. You can hear it in people's tones. The AOY helped solidify my career, and nobody can take that away from me.
Registration for the 2016 FLW Fantasy Fishing season is now open. Fantasy Fishing is free to play and allows fishing fans from across the globe to compete for the largest fantasy cash prizes in the sport while following along with each Walmart FLW Tour event. To enter, participants can log on and register at FantasyFishing.com. FLW Members will need to enter their member number to be eligible for "Members Advantage" tools.
A number of FLW anglers have been added to the Ardent Tackle pro-staff roster, including Walmart FLW Tour pros JT Kenney, Clayton Batts, Michael Neal, Bryan Schmitt and Jim Jones. That quintet will join current Team Ardent members Denny Brauer of the Costa FLW Series and Tour pro Scott Canterbury. Team Ardent consists of about 250 tournament anglers.
Excitement is in the air as the first Costa FLW Series event of 2016 prepares to kick off on Thursday morning. This past weekend the first FLW Bass Fishing League event of the season took place on Okeechobee, and the lake definitely showed out.
