Although Texas is known for its bruiser largemouths, some of its lakes harbor world-class spotted bass as well, as Josh Helmstetler discovered when he caught a 5.98-pound spot Jan. 9 at Lake Alan Henry near Lubbock.

Last weekend Jason Lambert proved that he not only can catch fish on the Tennessee River ledges, but also in the vast, shallow expanse that is Lake Okeechobee. Lambert bested the 250-boat field in the Costa FLW Series opener on Okeechobee, which was presented by Power-Pole and hosted by Okeechobee County Tourism, by targeting staging fish in outside grass lines in spawning areas.

Mark Howard toughed it out in a grueling Costa FLW Series on Lake Okeechobee presented by Power-Pole. His three-day cumulative total of 26 pounds, 6 ounces etched out the day-two leader by 9 ounces in a dramatic final weigh-in. The victory earned Howard $2,500 and a new Ranger boat.
Lake Okeechobee was stingy at best when it came to showing off the caliber of bass that lurk in it during the season-opening event of the Costa FLW Series Southeastern Division presented by Power-Pole and hosted by Okeechobee County Tourism. Despite having what locals thought were prime conditions for a smashfest, Saturday's competition wasn't as eventful as anticipated. Nevertheless, Jason Lambert defended his day-two lead after grinding out a 12-pound, 12-ounce limit to claim the title and $60,000 payday.

If things line up how they should, Saturday's competition could be a shootout for the win with heavy weights expected. Putting pressure on Lambert will be nine other anglers who are anxious to get back on the lake - namely the four Florida pros sitting right behind him.
