Is this the New Bass Fishing Capital of the South?

June 12, 2015 7:55 am
Dayton, Tenn., is situated on Richland Creek, a tributary that flows into the western side of Lake Chickamauga, one of the hottest bass fisheries in the country. Local officials with a flair for marketing - and good business sense - believe that Chickamauga can be the sellable "brand" that attracts bass fishermen to come and spend their time and their money in Dayton. They believe that old-fashioned Southern hospitality and small-town charm, plus trophy bass, are just the recipe for turning Dayton into "The New Bass Fishing Capital of the South."

A combo strategy of running deep and shallow patterns helped Bill McDonald put together a whopping 29-pound, 12-ounce limit in the Walmart FLW Tour event presented by Igloo Coolers on Lake Chickamauga. McDonald took the day-one lead by 3 pounds, 10 ounces over Tennessean Michael Wooley, who brought in 26-02. While many pros say the Chick is fishing tougher than its reputation usually suggests, 15 pros still cracked the 20-pound mark. And 67 pros caught at least 15 pounds.

Top 5 Patterns from Chickamauga Day 1

The story on day one of the Walmart FLW Tour event presented by Igloo Coolers on Lake Chickamauga was not dominated by the mega-school juggernaut that occurred the last time the Tour visited "Chick" in 2013. Bill McDonald's leading limit of 29 pounds, 12 ounces had nothing to do with a mega-school. In fact, two of his bigger bass - in the 7- to 8-pound class - came from shallow grass. This time around it seems as if the boats are spread out a little more compared to last time, when four- to six-angler clusters tried to share big ledge schools. Some pros say that's because the current didn't run until later in the day today, which had the main-river community holes off the pace of last time. Others believe a delayed spawn still has fish scattered from the bays to the river.

Deep or Shallow at Chickamauga?

6:53 am
There was no sentimentality attached to the smartphone photos anglers were showing off to each other prior to the Wednesday afternoon rules meeting of the Walmart FLW Tour event on Lake Chickamauga. The photos weren't of loved ones back home; rather, they were shots of big largemouth bass the fishermen had caught and released during practice earlier this week. In fact, there was a surprising number of such photos making the rounds, which suggests that the kind of hefty bass that can make or break a tournament for an angler are there ready and waiting as the four-day event presented by Igloo Coolers got underway this morning out of Dayton Boat Dock.

Breakfast with the Straders

Practice for a Walmart FLW Tour event is a grueling three-day stretch where pros usually burn up every minute of daylight out on the water. But for the last few seasons, FLW Tour rules have mandated an off day on the Wednesday before each tournament begins. We wanted to see what goes into the final hours of preparation before a Tour event, and so this morning, a day before the Tour's fifth stop begins on Lake Chickamauga, we invited ourselves over for breakfast with current Angler of the Year leader and tournament favorite Wesley Strader and his wife, Stephanie. The Straders live in Spring City, Tenn., just a few minutes up the road from the tournament site in Dayton. Here's the story.

Last time the Walmart FLW Tour stopped at Lake Chickamauga, then-rookie Casey Martin sacked over 100 pounds and won the event. As well as being a tremendous win for a rookie, the entire experience was documented on Circuit Breaker for an inside look at the entire process of winning a tournament. Now that we're back on the scene of Martin's greatest triumph, I jumped at the chance join him for a few hours the last morning of official practice to see how he approached the lake.
