Martin Aiming for the AOY

June 24, 2015 9:40 am
Scott Martin knows how to win. He won the 2011 Forrest Wood Cup. He is tied with Brent Ehrler and David Fritts for the most Walmart FLW Tour victories of all-time with five. He also has an FLW Series victory and trails only David Dudley in career earnings.

Friends of FLW College Fishing angler David Cosner have established a fund to help the Texas fisherman pay medical bills associated with his long battle with Wegener's Granulomatosis, a debilitating disease that gradually destroys the organs. Cosner, who founded the Texas State University Bass Cats and was named to the 2010 FLW College Fishing All-America team, was diagnosed with the rare disease in 2009 when he was 17 and since has had to undergo 215 surgeries.

While the field for the Walmart FLW Tour event was out looking for bass on the Potomac River we decided to see the sights as well. Launching at Smallwood State Park, we rolled out for a self-guided tour of the area in a Ranger Z520c. Below is a sampling of what we saw.

Practice with Adrian Avena

Adrian Avena might not have the years on the water that some of the other locals have, but he's currently sitting eighth in the AOY race and calculates that he only needs to catch one keeper to make the Forrest Wood Cup. I was happy to jump in the boat with him and co-angler Ian Renfrew for a few hours on the final day of practice for the Walmart FLW Tour event on the Potomac.

FLW is hauling a lot of hardware to Maryland this week for the final stop of the 2015 Walmart FLW Tour event presented by Ranger Boats on the Potomac River. The world's largest tournament fishing organization is also going to be writing some fat checks.

The Tide is Rising for Bryan Schmitt

7:05 am
It's 48 feet long, comes with words of wisdom, and when the Walmart FLW Tour heads to the Potomac River this week, it will be Bryan Schmitt's biggest advantage.

Thrift Flirting with Second AOY Title

6:49 am
Bryan Thrift can't say for certain what baits will sit on his front deck during the final Walmart FLW Tour event of 2015 on the Potomac River, which is set to kick off this Thursday, but he's quick to say what will not join him - the memory of his 2010 Angler of the Year title.

Top 10 Baits From the All-American

4:38 am
Curtis Richardson earned the win by throwing a Nichols Lures Magnum Spoon on the first two days and a 1/2-ounce drop-shot with a red bug-colored Zoom Magnum Trick Worm on the final day when the current slowed down.

Top 10 Patterns From The All-American

June 21, 2015 11:24 am
Giant spoons and drop-shot rigs were out in force during the All-American, as it strictly was a ledge tournament, but they weren't the only tools that the All-American anglers worked with in the three-day event.

Richardson Wins All-American

June 20, 2015 5:13 pm
Curtis Richardson has a way of surprising people - even himself. The Ontario angler had all but written himself off in the championship round of the Walmart Bass Fishing League All-American, thinking his limit of five bass wouldn't hold up for long with the likes of Jeremy Lawyer and Bill Schroeder breathing down his neck.
