Tough, tough and tough - that's the nearly universal word from pros who made trips to South Carolina's Lake Murray to pre-practice for the Forrest Wood Cup before the lake went off limits July 28. No competitor will get to fish the lake again until the official practice begins on Aug. 3, the Sunday prior to the competition, and all seem hopeful that the bite will get at least a little bit better between now and then.
The 2014 Walmart BFL season continues with two tournaments on Saturday, Aug. 2. The Hoosier Division will fish on the Ohio River and the Michigan Division will take on Lake St. Clair. Up to 400 boaters and co-anglers will be competing in each event for top awards up to $8,000 and $3,000 respectively.

There wasn't enough cake to hold all the candles when the Jimmy Houston clan celebrated family birthdays over the weekend in southern Oklahoma. By Chris Houston's count, 227 candles were required to mark the birthdays of Jimmy (who turned 70 on Monday) and Chris (Jimmy's wife, who observed her 67th birthday on Sunday), as well as their son Jamey (44), granddaughter-in-law Misty (28), and granddaughter Alexis (18).
While most of the 45 pros fishing the 2014 Forrest Wood Cup qualified via this season's Walmart FLW Tour, five Cup contenders earned their shot last season by winning angler-of-the-year titles in their respective Rayovac FLW Series divisions.
"I signed up for the tournament the day before, so I didn't have much practice time," said Malone. "I hadn't been on the river all year. I was looking for smallmouth but that didn't pan out. I went to my strong suit which is frog fishing. I won the Rayovac FLW Series tournament there in 2013 at about the same time of year doing basically the same thing.
"I kind of got lucky," said Hipsher, who has 10 career top-10 finishes on Kentucky Lake in BFL competition. "The last bite I got in practice game me a clue that the fish were chasing. The next morning when we went out my plan was to fish deep ledges with a jig and a worm. But it was cloudy and the wind was blowing and I thought the fish could be up on the shallow flats.
