Haynes clobbers 27+, wins again

May 31, 2014 6:48 pm
Bass fishing is supposed to be unpredictable. Each tournament is supposed to be anyone's to win. And when it's a ledge-fishing shoot-out, modern electronics supposedly have leveled the playing field. Yet, when Randy Haynes enters a tournament on the Tennessee River chain in summer, the results have gotten downright predictable. This afternoon at the Country Chevrolet dealership parking lot in Benton, Ky., Mark Rose, Jason Lambert and Barry Wilson all brought more than 24 pounds to the scales in a final-day slugfest at the Rayovac FLW Series Central Division tournament on Kentucky Lake. Each probably felt like he had a strong shot at walking away the champion, and statistically they all did. The field was only separated by about 4 pounds to start the day. But, on days when everyone in the field has a stellar outing, it seems like Haynes is still just a little bit better. It's almost feels like it's not even fair. Haynes strung together a three-day series of limits that went 25-01, 22-10 and 27-10 To take the champion's trophy by a margin of 1 pound, 14 ounces.

Lambert grabs Kentucky Lake lead

Jason Lambert wasn't complaining about catching 75 bass and weighing in a 24-pound, 3-ounce limit, but that doesn't mean everything went according to plan today. The Pickwick Dam, Tenn., pro struggled to truly tap into the potential that's out there in Kentucky Lake right now, yet he still managed to up his two-day total to 48 pounds, 9 ounces and grab a slim 7-ounce lead going into the final day of the Rayovac FLW Series Central Division's second event. "It was slow today - slow for Kentucky Lake," says Lambert. "At 1:30, I only had 16 pounds. I had two schools I was going to save, but I had to lean on them today. I caught 75 bass, but they just weren't the right ones."

It’s likely to be a ledge game at Pickwick

Of the approximately 170 anglers who'll be competing, a relative few of them will be vying for one of the 35 Forrest Wood Cup slots available for the August championship. A few weeks later, the last Tour event of the season, at Kentucky Lake, will settle matters for good.

Ledge season begins

This week is the beginning of what I call the initial leg of the FLW ledge-fishing expert benefit swing. The Rayovac FLW Series event on Kentucky Lake, currently taking place, is the first in a trio of FLW events to be held on Tennessee River lakes, the latter two being the Walmart FLW Tour on Pickwick Lake and the Walmart FLW Tour grand finale on Kentucky lake. Each tournament promises to be a postspawn, offshore shootout, and like some other anglers, I'm not particularly thrilled with this part of the season, for a couple of reasons.
