In the first FLW Tour event of the year at Lake Okeechobee, most of the anglers who did well fished the giant grass beds in and around Harney Pond, the Monkey Box area, Fisheating Creek, Bird Island and the North Shore on the Northwest part of the lake. Many of the top anglers in the event fished different patterns within the giant area. Some were flipping, while others cast swimbaits, jigs and ChatterBaits over and around the grass. Both techniques worked well and many used a one-two punch employing both patterns.

Inaugural Florida High School Open winners Brenton Clemons and Colton Smith of Southwestern High School in Somerset, Ky., are seniors who hope to pursue bass fishing at the collegiate level in FLW College Fishing. They plan to fish all but one High School Fishing Open in 2014.
The BFL South Carolina Division tournament originally scheduled for Feb. 15 on Lake Murray out of Dreher Island State Park has been canceled due to the ice storm that is sweeping through the area. The event will be rescheduled as soon as possible.
A lot of times in the spring, bass tend to short-strike soft plastics, and maybe even bite the tail off. Some anglers just pass these off as small fish, but that's not always the case. Bigger fish will do it, too, especially when the spawn is going on. They're not really feeding; they're just aggravated.

What a way to kick off 2014, although it was not exactly the way I envisioned it.
After competing in regional tournaments at a high level for many years, Greg Bohannan fished his first Walmart FLW Tour season in 2008. Each of his first three years on Tour was productive and concluded with trips to the Forrest Wood Cup. But instead of continuing that progression, Bohannan's last three seasons have largely been substandard.

The Walmart Bass Fishing League Music City Division tournament originally scheduled for Feb. 15 on Kentucky Lake out of Paris Landing State Park is being rescheduled for March 8 on Kentucky Lake.
ZWOLLE, La. - FLW College Fishing is headed to Toledo Bend Feb. 15 for the first Southern Conference tournament of the season. Up to 50 college teams will be competing for a top award of $2,000 and a berth in the 2014 Southern Conference Invitational.
On Wednesday, Feb. 12, the FLW Podcast team of Jody White and Joe Opager will interview FLW Tour pro Brett Hite of Phoenix, Ariz., the winner of the 2014 FLW Tour Lake Okeechobee event, as part of the ongoing FLW Podcast series.
Two things stand out about winter bass fishing: The fish get a little bit pickier about where they want to be, and anglers don't want to spend as much time running a bass boat around a frigid lake trying to find them.
