In search of sponsorships

November 21, 2013 7:06 am
Today's angler must be part businessman, part fishing genius. Being a good brand representative is also key. And some anglers are better at securing sponsors than others. It's a skill learned largely from experience, and veteran anglers will tell you it's not easy to convince a company to give you money so you can fish for a living.

Pro Tips Weekly: Ray Scheide

The rule of thumb has it that tight-wobbling crankbaits are better to use in the colder months and during prespawn. In my experience, that's generally true, although I don't have a bulletproof explanation for it. Maybe it has something to do with water temperature, color and depth.

Tuesday Tour Update: Canterbury on crappies, construction and catching bass

7:00 am
Expanding your game and learning things outside your comfort zone is critical to be a well-rounded angler on the Walmart FLW Tour. For Straight Talk Wireless pro Scott Canterbury, stepping out of his element meant leaving the comfort of the bank to begin deciphering the offshore game.

Aluminum all-stars

November 18, 2013 8:44 am
The economics are clear - you can climb into a fully-rigged Ranger aluminum bass boat complete with electronics, trolling motor, outboard and a Ranger Trail Trailer (equipped with deluxe wheels, swing-away tongue and waterproof lights) for around $17,000- $21,500 based on model and options. You'll part with a lot less cash on each boat payment, but you'll have a hard time listing a lot of "give-ups."

Martin’s musings

November 15, 2013 9:33 am
It has been a while since my last blog but I will now be doing a monthly blog on FLWOutdoors.com which will be featured during the second week of every month. I've spent the last few months since the Forrest Wood Cup catching up, visiting family, working on stuff to be prepared for 2014 and getting back to some fun fishing. Fall is a great time to be fishing on the TVA and Guntersville has been on fire so I have spent some time out there working on set ups and trying to improve on some weaknesses. Obviously living in the south I have spent quite a few Saturdays watching college football and the Tide is still rolling which should make for a great Iron Bowl.

Smoke on the water

Here goes round No. 2 of my blog. Things are relatively quiet around the house as we enjoy the holidays. We had a good Halloween. I didn't dress up, but my son Wylie was a sushi roll and my wife Allison was what she called a "hot mess" where she wore a bunch of strangely mismatched clothes. Her costume was more of a last-minute deal, but she put a lot of effort into Wylie's sushi roll. She planned to save a bunch of money and make it herself, but after several trips to Walmart I don't think that happened. The costume turned out great though; Allison is really good at stuff like that.
